MTV Movie and TV Awards 2023: Find out who won!
Following a tumultuous week of production modifications for the MTV Movie & TV Awards due to the writers' strike, a motley gang of actors won golden popcorn statuettes on Sunday.
"Top Gun: Maverick" joined TV programs "Stranger Things," "The Last of Us," "The White Lotus," and "Wednesday" as the scripted content nominees with the most. In the unscripted categories, series including "Jersey Shore Family Vacation," "RuPaul's Drag Race," "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," and "Vanderpump Rules" led the nominations. The Comic Genius Award went to Jennifer Coolidge, while the greatest musical moment award went to Purple Hearts for "Come Back Home."
Drew Barrymore was set to host the annual gala, but she said on Thursday that she will step away as a gesture of solidarity for the ongoing writers' strike. Despite the fact that some of Barrymore's lines had already been filmed prior to the strike, the event carried ahead without a formal presenter. Barrymore promised to return as host for the 2024 program in a statement.
Following reports that striking Writers Guild of America members planned to picket at the Santa Monica Barker Hangar, where the event is being filmed, executive producer Bruce Gillmer told CNN that the MTV Movie & TV Awards were "pivoting away from a live event" by airing a pre-taped version of the ceremony on Sunday.
Part of the telecast's pivot included flashback segments from prior MTV Movie & TV Awards events, which comprised the vast majority of the broadcast, as well as pre-recorded statements by winners.
