Alan Rickman died at the age of 69 at his home in London. His relatives confirmed his death by remaining with him throughout his final moments. Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the film series, expressed his sorrow at Rickman's death, noting that he was one of the first performers on the Potter set to treat him as an equal rather than a child. Rickman, he said, had a great sense of humour and was always full of energy and imagination, making him a delight to work with. Alan Rickman: Who Is He?

Alan Sidney was born on February 21, 1946, in Hammersmith, London. Patrick Rickman was the son of factory worker, house painter and decorator, and former Second World War aircraft fitter Bernard William Rickman and housewife Margaret Doreen Rose (née Bartlett).

He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) after studying at RADA (the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) in London and acting in modern and classical theatre performances. In 1985, he received great praise for his performance as the Vicomte de Valmont in the RSC stage version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. He was nominated for a Tony Award after the production traveled to the West End in 1986 and Broadway in 1987.

In 1988, he made his film debut as Hans Gruber in Die Hard. He rose to prominence after playing the malevolent Professor Snape in the Harry Potter series. Rickman has also directed two films, The Winter Guest (1997) and A Little Chaos (2014).
